THE ENTREPRENEURIAL NETWORK OF MARBELLA AND CAMPO DE GIBRALTAR (REM) CELEBRATES FOR THE SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR “EQUAL PAY DAY”
Mercedes Herranz was the guest of honour today in the struggle for equal wages for women entrepreneurs
Marbella, 21 of February_ The Cortijo Miraflores Cultural Center was the place chosen to host an event to mark the Day for Equal Salary between Women and Men, an event organized by the Network of Entrepreneurs of Marbella- Malaga- Campo de Gibraltar (REM), in collaboration with the municipal equality delegation of the Marbella City Council.
The event was attended by municipal representatives such as the Delegate of Equality and Diversity, Isabel Cintado, who once again emphasized the great work of REM in the female business world in Marbella.
This day, which has been organized for the last 7 years in Marbella, claims the right to equal pay for all women. Equal Pay Day is an initiative that was pioneered by the Business Professional Women´s Federation (to which REM has belonged since 2012 and is held annually throughout Europe, in order to highlight the wage gap between women and men.
This special day symbolizes the number of days extra that a woman has to work in order to earn the same as a man. In the case of Spain, this difference translates into 418 days (365 + 53), the celebration is held annually on February 22, the date agreed on since 2010 as the “International Day for Equal Salary.”
The wage gap between men and women has not been narrowed in Spain in recent times but has become increasingly larger. On average, women earn 30% less than men, and this wage gap is what must be eliminated by claiming the right for women for fair and equitable remuneration. The wage discrimination that occurs most in companies is subtle and indirect: having nothing to do with the base salary, but with the bonuses and with a different salary for jobs that have an equal value. In Article 28 of the Workers’ Statute, the right to equality in the economic remuneration of men and women is recognized, for performing the same work or for work of equal value.
As the guest of honour they had Mercedes Herranz Marco, an expert in circular economy and sustainability, responsible for the Internalization of SMEs at the consultant Indor (Internalización y Desarrollo de Organizations S.A.L) she also advises on business innovation in order to enhance competitiveness. Thanks to her training and professional career, Mercedes is a favorite when it comes to transmitting to companies the knowledge, skills and benefits of moving towards a more sustainable business model.
Among her many awards, since April 2019, she has been selected as an Evaluation Expert by INNOWWIDE and EURO-STARS projects that are managed in Spain by CDTI and pertain to the EUREKA secretariat of the European Union. In addition, in July 2018, Mercedes was selected to participate in the I Summit of Technological Innovation and Circular Economy, where she was also named Leader in Circular Economy by Advanced Leadership Foundation (ALF).

This year the Delegation of Equality of the Delegation of Malaga has awarded REM BPW Costa del Sol and Campo de Gibraltar, the “Recognized 2019” award for the commitment to promote gender equality and promote the need for a more equal world between women and men. An effort that, throughout all these years, recognizes a hard work to highlight the value and presence, in society, of professional women and entrepreneurs.
